Bob Childs Visits Wantage

18 Feb 2024

High Peak: Behold, the Highest Peak! Glittering in the sun!

So began a journey of the spirit, mind and soul for Wantage Concert Brass on Sunday 18th February under the experienced baton of Bob Childs.

His opening introduction, a recording of Eric Ball himself introducing the inspiration behind High Peak, put the words in the title above to the opening bars, giving the players a poetic framework for the music. In his two hour workshop, the band were introduced to areas of High Peak that are inaccessible to many, and offered insights into ways to make the music come alive in the way the composer intended.

“This mountain is unforgiving but offers a beauty all its own when played with the respect and passion it deserves.”

The bands journey up the mountain was treacherous at times, but with the right guide, is one worth making. Huge thanks to Bob for making the journey to Wantage, and to Simon Jones, the bands conductor, who facilitated and enabled the experience for the members.

In the words of the man himself:

"Can't really go wrong if you do what's on the score."

Wantage Concert Brass will play High Peak by Eric Ball in the First Section of the London and Southern Counties Regional Contest on Sunday 17th March at Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre. Spaces are still available on the bands coach at £20 return for those who wish to join them. Email contact@wantageband.org or message via the Wantage Silver Band Facebook page for more information.
