Success for Wantage 'A' Band at Folkestone

Wantage Silver 'A' Band, conducted by Phil Bailey, won the top section at the SCABA (Southern Counties Amateur Brass Association) contest held at Leas Cliff Hill in Folkestone on Sunday 16th October. Their playing of Gregson's 17-min masterpiece 'Of Men and Mountains' drew rave comments from adjudicator Peter Roberts and clinched victory over top Belgian band Kortrijk (2nd) and Friary Guildford (3rd). The band's Principal Cornet, Steve Chapman, won the TW Federation cup for the best instrumentalist in the contest.

This was the band's first visit to this popular contest, but is almost certainly not their last, because in addition to winning one of the Brass Band movement's most impressive trophies (The Borough of Hove Trophy), the players enjoyed the excellent facilities of Leas Cliff Hall, which is built into the cliff, and provides a wonderful venue for a Band contest.
