Last Night of the Proms Concert
Who Needs the Royal Albert Hall?
Conducted by Phil Bailey, the Wantage Band presented an outstanding Last Night of the Proms Concert on Saturday 14th July, featuring all the favourites including Pomp and Circumstance and Jerusalem. The Band, as usual, gave a great performance , and even treated us to special effects in the rousing Dambusters March (complete with floodlights and sirens) followed by 633 Squadron.
“Spanish Eyes” from a sombrero topped Steve Chapman and “Pie Jesu” a duet from Helen Wright and Brian Thomas were show stopping. Trumpet Concerto featuring the cornets required not only playing skills, but choreography and precision and was brilliantly executed.
The jokes and commentry provided by our resident Compere Andrew Gregory were much appreciated and applauded.
.... and the crowning glory was Rule Britannia sung by a sparkling Julia Reynolds
Enthusiastically waving their flags and stamping their feet the audience demonstrated their enjoyment and appreciation of this exceptional evening.
Many thanks to Ron (resplendent in Union Jack tie) and all his helpers for organising the concert and to our other helpers Ann C and Ann G, Jean, Lucy, Eleanor, Lynn, Andrew C, our lighting gurus John and Chris to mention only a few.
Wantage Silver Band has been making music in Wantage, Oxfordshire and beyond since 1972.
Our 'A' Band competes in the prestigious Championship Section of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain and having won the Regionals recently will be competing at the Championships in October at the Royal Albert Hall. Our 'B' Band is in Second Section and will be competing at the Nationals in Cheltenham in September, having been awarded 2nd place at the Regionals, whilst our Academy Brass competed for the first time in Fourth Section this year. To complete WSB we have a Concert Brass, a Youth Brass, a Trainer Band, Beginners and the Big Band.
