Wantage Youth Brass Chill Out

30 attendees, 4 music staff and 6 helpers went by coach to our very own residential workshop at Dunfield House, Kington, Herefordshire on Tuesday 12th April.

There were full band practices, sectionals, mini-workshops, a concert, a campfire, a penguin dance and even African Drumming led by a specialist percussion tutor brought in for the purpose. The food was just short of brilliant because we want more beans for breakfast (eggs too) and fewer tomatoes. In all other respects it was quite exceptional. The service was superb and the venue excellent. A 7am walk over the Welsh border was attended by more than just adults and the Disney Quiz was spectacular. We even sang improvised harmonies and madrigals before lunch (and during). Next year is already booked!

Our Thursday evening concert in the main hall at Dunfield House was well received. Within a day of arriving back in Wantage we were proud to receive an email and a letter of thanks from people who had attended the concert, and were so impressed with our youngsters that they simply had to write and tell us.

Well done, Youth Brass.

We are deeply grateful to Oxford Fireplace Centre and Quavas Ltd, both of whom provided sponsorship that enabled us to keep the price down and also to allow some people to attend who might otherwise have had to miss out completely. Further thanks are due to the British Federation of Brass Bands, who provided further funds to help us make the event even more successful.

If you want to hear what we practised, please come along to the Youth Concert on Saturday 7th May. The massed band will be playing Wall of Sound (written last year for the National Children’s Brass Band). Also in evidence will be our African Drumming, singing and Taiko Drummers.
