Band Hall Fund Donation From Local MP

The Wantage Silver Band's Bandhall project was given a Christmas boost by the generous donation of a personal cheque for £500 from local MP, Ed Vaizey. Shown receiving the gift are Band Chairman Eleanor Turner (right) and Bandmaster Eileen Sykes.

Christmas Concert

The 'A' band Christmas Concert, held in the Civic Hall on Saturday 5th December was a sell-out. The audience much appreciated the playing and especially 'The Blue Tones', the Millbrook School choir (led by Pauline Davies) who sang beautifully and with great enthusiasm - and impressive actions!

Remembrance Parade

Sunday, 9th November saw the regular annual Remembrance Parades, with bands leading the Royal British Legion contingents with Scouts and similar groups to church services in Wantage and Hanney. Bandsmen also played 'Last Post' at several local village war memorials on that day and on Wantage square on the 11th.

Pontins Contest 2009

The 'A' band again entered this prestigious contest at the Prestatyn holiday camp on 25th October. Having thought they played well (with fine support from 5 deputies drawn from the Flowers, MK Brass, Cory, Fodens and Sovereign bands) they were very disappointed to be placed 10th out of the 15 bands that played. Local rivals Kidlington were placed 6th.

Concert Brass Success

While Wantage Concert Brass was formed deliberately as a "non-contesting" group within the WSB organisation, they decided to support the Oxford and District BB Association's revival of the former annual Entertainment Contest and entered in the "Unregistered" section of this year's contest at Burford School on Sunday 11th October.

Annual Concert 2009

This year's annual concert on Saturday October 10th played to a packed audience at Wantage Civic Hall. The format again featured all current sections of the organisation playing three or four items, from Training Band through to 'A' Band.

'B' Band placed 4th in the National 4th Section

The 28 players of the 'B' Band and their conductor Danny Dullforce had a fine result at the National Brass Band 4th Section Championships held on September 26th in Harrogate. Having been placed 2nd at the London and Southern Counties area contest earlier in the year to qualify, they faced up to the 1st and 2nd bands of all other areas of the country, and came 4th out of the 19 competing bands.

Marching Workshop

On Sunday 20th September, over 60 members of the Wantage Band were entertained to a Marching Workshop given by the Band of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) at their Arborfield headquarters. Instruction was given in playing a march and marching in step - then both together.

Aldbourne Carnival

The annual Aldbourne Carnival was held on September 5th, and Wantage Band was invited again to participate. Always a tricky time at the end of the holiday period and with Youth Band busy that day, we were nevertheless able to field a decent band, playing mostly light-hearted march tunes. The members appeared to enjoy themselves!

Anniversary Bandogram

To celebrate the occasion of their Ruby Wedding, Peter and Ann Barber were surprised to be entertained in their lovely garden by a 'Bandogram' organised by their son Andrew (solo euphonium of Concert Brass).

Royal Park, Greenwich

The Wantage Band made its first appearance at a Royal Park Bandstand on Sunday 12th July, playing at the Greenwich Park. A full coach of players and supporters enjoyed good weather and found the park very interesting to visit - although players had to be content with a quick trip around the Observatory and refreshments, before setting up in the Bandstand, where we played from 2 - 5 p.m.

Farewell Ellen!

The Greenwich Bandstand was the last official engagement undertaken by solo cornet Ellen Chadwick before she leaves to attend University, and the band members presented her with a radio alarm clock. We wish her well in her studies and look forward to many guest appearances in the future!

Advanced Youth at Birmingham

Having performed successfully in the Oxfordshire area 'Music for Youth Festival' back in March, the Wantage Advanced Youth Ensemble took part in the next round in Symphony Hall in Birmingham on Thursday 9th July. With Phil Bailey conducting, they put up a grand show, much appreciated by the audience and the large contingent of our supporters!

Tugwell Field Celebration

About 100 Band members and supporters turned out for an informal celebration of the completion of the access road into Tugwell Field, site of the planned new Band Hall. After an impromptu fanfare from a cross-section of members, Chairman Eleanor Turner cut the ribbon across the gateway, and those present enjoyed games (led by Ron Hill), barbeque and beer tent.

Armed Forces Day

Saturday 27th June was nationally-designated Armed Forces Day, and the Wantage Band had the honour of leading the Wantage parade. The parade formed up outside the Parish Church for the National Anthem, the Oration and The Last Post and Reveille (played by Steve Chapman).

Youth Band / Imperial Singers Concert

On Sunday 21st June, the Youth Band gave a concert in Marcham Church, jointly with the Imperial Male Voice Choir, a group comprised of graduates of Imperial College, London. Band conductor Roger Middlebrook provides the link between the two organisations, being a former member of the choir, here impressing the band members by participating in a vocal quartet.

Rachel's Wedding

Former WSB trombonist and percussionist Rachel Kowalski was married to Mark Tugwell at Ardington Church on Saturday 20th June. 'A' Band played the hymns and incidental music in the church and were led by the happy couple on the march to Ardington House for the reception. Take a look at a video of the march on YouTube.

Stanton Harcourt Festival

A mixture of 'A', 'B', Concert Brass and Youth Band players enjoyed perfect weather in leading the Stanton Harcourt Festival Parade on Saturday 13th June. After the march, the band gave a Concert, conducted by Alan Sykes. This was an unusual "All Seasons Festival", with real reindeer, mulled wine and mince pies, an Easter egg hunt, Maypole dancing and more!

Pub Lunches

An innovation this year has been a series of Pub Lunch Concerts by the Youth Band, which have been popular and successful. Here, the band (with a few helpers!) entertain in the garden of the 'King Alfred Head' in Wantage.

Rogation Sunday

Rogation Sunday is the fifth Sunday after Easter, at which the ancient custom of "beating the bounds" takes place - the time when farmers used to walk the boundaries of their fields while the clergy asked divine blessing on their annual crops, etc.

In Memoriam - Ken Robey

Kenneth James Robey passed away on Monday 11th May 2009 at the age of 88. The Band has lost a long-time member and supporter and was very proud to provide the music at his funeral service, held at West Hendred Church on Saturday 18th May. Ken was born into a banding family, and learnt to play baritone in the Ardington & Lockinge Band.

Much Credit at Blackpool

The 'A' Band eagerly awaited their visit, by invitation, to the prestigious 2009 Spring Festival event in Blackpool's Winter Gardens complex, where many of the country's best bands compete in three simultaneous contests in the various halls - for the Senior Trophy, the Senior Cup and the Grand Shield.

Band Parades

Wantage Silver Band came to public notice again through recent parades. Concert Brass led the United Churches' Palm Sunday parade through Wantage on April 5th, while 'A' and 'B' Bands led St.George's Day parades through Wantage and Wallingford respectively on April 26th. The picture shows 'B' Band in Wallingford town centre as the rest of the parade filed into St. Mary's Church.

Another Successful Youth Concert

Youth Concerts have become a regular annual event in Wantage, and this year's concert in King Alfred's school centre site hall on April 25th was as successful as ever, with contributions from Youth Brass, the Training Band, Junior Brass and the Advanced Youth Ensemble. The picture shows the massed youth groups at the finale!

News of Denise

Everyone in the band will have their memories of Denise Clark, either as fellow 'A' Band player, as leader of our Junior Brass group or as music teacher in schools and on a personal basis. She contributed so much to WSB in various ways and we were all disappointed when husband Andy moved to the USA with his business and took her and their family with him.

Concert for Parkinson's Disease Charity

WSB 'Concert Brass' together with the St. Denys Handbell Ringers presented a 'Supper Concert' on Sunday 5th April in East Challow Village Hall in aid of a Parkinson's Disease charity. Long-term member of the band, Carol Tomkins, inspired the event since she is a sufferer from the disease.

Music for Youth Contest

Not quite a contest perhaps, more of a showcase of local musical talent, with the opportunity for advancement to a further, broader-based event. A WSB 'Advanced Youth Ensemble' entered this contest on 28th March at Bayards Hill School in Oxford, conducted by Phil Bailey. The ensemble consisted mainly of Youth Band players but also included young players from the A, B and Concert Brass bands.

Triumph for Wantage 'B' Band at Stevenage

The first picture shows our 'B' Band celebrating with the Christie Challenge Cup after being placed 2nd out of the 27 bands in the London & Southern Counties 4th section (although due to the difficulty of the testpiece, 'The Talisman', only 16 entered the contest).

London Marathon Sponsorship

As a boost to our new Band Hall building fund, our founder Doug Brand is training hard to take part in the 2009 London Marathon in April, and is seeking sponsorship on our behalf, together with a diabetes charity, being a long-term diabetic himself.

Inner Band Contest 2009

This year's series of internal band competitions was held on 1st March in the Newbury Street Church School, including classes for beginners through to experienced players. Judges for the day were Dougall Prophet and Danny Dullforce.

Charity Concert, Didcot

The Wantage Band presented a Concert 'Magic of the Movies - and More' on Saturday 7th February, in Didcot Civic Hall, the proceeds of which are to be given to Multiple Sclerosis Societies.

Leamington Spa Contest

'B' Band travelled to Leamington again this year, to play Philip Sparke's difficult "Triptych" in the 4th section of the West Midlands Brass Bands Association contest.
